Birthday Cake Masterpiece for the Boys!

Ok, so I'd given a lot of thought to this cake I was to make for Phil and Danny at work. They have back-to-back birthdays so I told them we were gonna do a combo cake on one day. I concepted and concepted and put a lot of thought into this. yay! I also wanted to use the opportunity to try out a few recipes for wedding cakes...
So I've been looking for a chocolate cake that didn't turn out dry. Chocolate is still the thorn in my side because, well, I suppose I haven't baked with it enough to know it as well as I believe I should. So, lots of work to do this year!

Anyhow, the bottom layer was chocolate, brushed with a simple syrup (since I made the cake two days before I served it and I was terrified it was going to be hard as a brick by the time it was served!), raspberry coulis and buttercream between the layers. The second tier was my classic yellow cake (1234 if you must know :) with lemon curd and the rest of the raspberry coulis. Frosted with buttercream it was just the most delicious thing ever, even if I did have to take a cab to work to get it there. I know the boys appreciated it :)
